Once Disney bought them, the making of three more movies was their first announcement. There is a TON of material that covers what happens after Episode 6, and the movie can choose to take from that, or make their own.

Cliff's notes for what happens after Episode 6:

Everyone that lived has kids, who grow up to do exactly what the generation before them did (become politicians/jedi/sith). They keep making Death Star-like superweapons as well, and blowing them up after one display of awesomeness. An alien race that's immune to the force invades and people fight them.

Never was a huge fan of the Star Wars saga, I'll wait until it hits DVD. I like the idea that JJ. Abrams is doing it.
