#2 for 2014

J.K. Simmons, Paul Reiser (Mad About You), and Miles Teller (The Spectacular Now 2013). A directorial debut for Damien Chazelle. IMDB says this was 107 minutes - 1 hour 47 minutes - if asked, I would have sworn it was at least 2 hours, and not because of any pacing issues - the film is tight, with a linear storyline that seems to alternate between full bore on the track of the Daytona 500 and everyday life - throwing in a few streets of San Francisco hills for an emotional rollercoaster effect, while blindfolded as you get little warning of the ups or downs - or sideways. Another rarity - where the music lured me through the entire credits. I'll also say that I was soon searching for a certain CD online when I got home.

I really loved this a lot. I thought both Simmons and Teller were fantastic, and loved the soundtrack. It really resonated with me big time. I played trumpet starting in grade school through college (actually still do occasionally) and had a music instructor through junior high and high school who had a similar intensity as Simmons. He wasn't verbally abusive, but did on occasion kick over a music stand when the band screwed up and constantly strove for perfection. He'd also make someone stand up and play a passage in a number until they got it right, even if it took 15 minutes. I also can relate to the character played by Teller, the non-stop practicing to be the best.

I saw this last night and was really pleasantly surprised. I knew nothing of the film before watching, so I didn't know what to expect. Wow, a couple of powerhouse performances! I'm glad to see JK Simmons being recognized for this role ... he's been a rather underrated actor. I wish more people would see this movie to learn that he's more than just the Farmers Insurance guy.

Finally got to see Whiplash. The music director character is way over-the-top.. BUT.. J.K. Simmons is fantastic in his portrayal of him! He pretty much steals the show. Over all, the movie is pretty good. Definitely not a great masterpiece as the hype would have it.
