I always have a problem with this kind of question, because it mostly just leads to the same lists that you'd find in good reference books, except with more middling movies included.

Most everything by Jean Pierre Melville, Francais director..took his last name after the great American writer of Moby Dick...

I think every American director of gangster or crime movies had to have watched his films. It's Melville first and everybody else after in my estimation when it comes to making those kinds of films. Beautiful in b&w..
