Why in the world did these great movie stars partake in this lousy movie? I just don't get it. George Clooney, Matt Damon, Kate Blanchett, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Bill Murray, and ? There wasn't any real acting, no plot, no action and it was pretty boring. Are they so hard up they had to make this mess? The stolen artwork was indeed worth the attempt to retrieve it. But the movie just didn't do this story justice.

I was so looking forward to this movie but everyone I've read says it's a bust.
I'll wait for the cheap online version.

Well George Clooney was in it, so yeah it's gonna be bad. And why do those stars do movies like that? Easy, MONEY.

You remind me of Sir John Gielgud, who famously appeared in that movie made by the owner of Penthouse magazine, "Caligula" (Helen Mirren was also in it).

Asked why he agreed to appear in such a pornographic movie, Mr. Gilgud replied "There was no pornography on the check when I cashed it".

If you're interested in the true story there's a great documentary called The Rape of Europa about the Monuments Men. It was on Netflix streaming last I checked.

There is also the book upon which the film was based, "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History" by Robert M. Edsel.

I found it in the public library a couple of months back and gave it a try. I found it tedious and didn't get past the first third of the book. Part of the problem was that the book was overly detailed, bringing to the readers every single aspect of the matter whether it was interesting or not, and part of the problem was my own attitude toward how vital what was being done really was. That latter stems from my general disinterest in art and inability to grasp why others place so much value on this rather than that.

I'm really interested in the subject matter and wanted to see the movie, but it generally hasn't gotten a good response.

Guess if I want a Nazi treasure movie, I'll watch Kelly's Heroes again.

The projected opening weekend box office gross of a shade over $20,000,000 will be good for 2nd place, behind the $60M opening for 'The Lego Movie' blockbuster.

The reviews for TMM have indeed been mixed, but I'll see it anyway; a $4.50 admission price for a matinee in a spiffy new movie theatre here in LA is to good to pass up. Clooney also directed Good Night & Good Luck which was exceptional, as well as The Ides Of March, which was also very good.
