Anyone else disappointed by this installment? The effects were great, of course, but it's starting to feel as though they're running out of story. This is the first edition that I was actually glad when it was finally over, except for the lack of resolution at the ending. What do y'all think about it?

I feel like I've seen so many mediocre movies this year that I'm starting to wonder if I'm getting too critical. I would have to agree with you that I came away disappointed.

Spoiler
Nearly the whole movie seemed to be one CGI chase/improbable escape after another. The attempt at a love story seemed really forced and way too quick. It's pretty well known that Dwarves and Elves just don't like each other! Talking spiders? I couldn't tell if I was watchin an homage to Harry Potter, or Jackson's bug scene in King Kong? The pacing of the movie seemed frenetic, where you see an Orc for just a second then he's got an arrow in him and he's replaced by another, yet at the same time, the movie just dragged. I actually cringed at the scene where the Dwarf on the riverbank had a barrel over him, his arms through the sides of the barrel, with an axe in each hand as he spun around. I thought, 'This is Jar Jar Binks territory.' There was never any concern that anyone could be killed, and you never got the chance to actually care about any of the characters even if one did. It seemed to take hours to actually get to Smaug. When they did, it was pretty impressive, they did an excellent job there, but not enough to make me enjoy the movie as a whole. I left the theater thinking that the film suffered from the same affliction as Van Helsing, a movie with so much potential ruined by too much 'Here we go again' chase scenes.

Was it terrible? No........just not as entertaining as I hoped.

I actually really enjoyed it! (except the spider part lol just creepy) The effects and soundtrack were amazing and the fight scenes were pretty intense, hate cliffhangers but it ended well! I just loved it period

I was so disappointed in the first HOBBIT movie that I have no desire to see this one in the theaters. I'll wait until the extra special super duper version 9.0 director's cut producer's vault now with added special features DVDs are out of all 3 installments, then watch them. Until then, I just can't work up any enthusiasm.

Heh heh.........they do seem to want to milk every dollar these days don't they? Theater version, director's cut version, uncut version, additional features version, 10th anniversary version.

A very rough representation of the book. Stretched out too far. Definitely made for a dumbed down audience who mostly didn't read the book (or any other book for that matter).

Another bastardization of a classic novel.

Surprised it didn't. He may as well of completely destroyed the book version altogether.

There was 90 minutes of pure special effects garbage in the movie that had absolutely nothing to do with the story.
