There have been many films with great performances by actors that affect me every time I watch them.
Some of my examples below. Wanted to show the clip of Christopher Walken in the veterans hospital
from the Deer Hunter and Jeffrey Rush's final solo performance in Shine (both unavailable to find clips).
Would like to hear from others.
Oh, yes, those are GREAT performances...I was thinking of
the lesser known, unsung performances.
Any of those around I might not have seen, so I can get them on Netflix?
I love to be wowed.

Funny that you should mention and ask that because when I read a suggested film and go
and search for it on Netflix, it is never available to stream.
There another film which I found disturbing - "Never Let Me Go." It's creepy
in the sense that I can see that happen in the future. That's when I first saw the
actress Carey Mulligan (she's Daisy in the new Great Gatsby) and Andrew Garfield.
Oh, great thread!
First, the obvious: Gary Cooper in High Noon, Oscar-winning performance. He had such a subtle way of acting, before "subtle" was in...
Katharine Hepburn in just about anything, but I think my favorite is The Philadelphia Story.
Next, the less obvious (or at least less famous): Ben Johnson in The Last Picture Show (but didn't he also win an Oscar for that?
Both Michael Caine and Sean Connery in The Man Who Would be King. I can watch them again and again!
Tyrone Power in Nightmare Alley. That is a fabulous performance, and nobody thought anything of it at the time, but it should count as his absolute best, not Zorro or Jesse James, or any of his other famous (and good) flicks.
Al Pacino - Scent Of A Woman and The Godfather 1 & 2
George C. Scott - Patton
Tom Cruise - Born On The Fourth Of July and The Last Samurai
Bette Davis - All About Eve
Sally Fields - Sybil
Glenn Close - Fatal Attraction
I have more to list but I'll save them for later.
I agree with many here on this list.
Tom Cruise's performance in Born On The Fourth Of July was the Academy Award that should have been awarded but wasn't. No matter if people like him in general or not, his peformance in this movie was unforgetable to me.
Sally Fields also in Steel Magnolias, and many others, always a strong and effective actor.
Bette Davis - I'll add Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, a study in pure madness.
Glenn Close was almost turned down for Fatal Attraction. NO ONE but her could have done the role, she was absolutely chilling.
I agree that Cruise's performance in Born on the 4th of July was outstanding. Sally Fields also after the funeral as she
broke down in grief and anger. Read that originally Glenn Close was supposed to be the wife but came in for an
audition all dressed up as Alex.
