I know he had a bit part in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", in which he was Nicolas Coppola. Then, he got real attention with "Valley Girl". They REALLY noticed him!

EDIT: I used to jot down names of people who looked really interesting, such as Matt Dillon and Vincent Spano in "Over the Edge". Of course, I was in my 20s/30s then, so I very clearly remember various eras of films.

Ding ding ding- yes indeed! Nicolas Coppola was in FTRH. He was supposed to play Penn's roll but he was not old enough yet to work adult hours.
Eric Stoltz was also among Penn's buddies. Not sure who the third guy was or if he did anything bigger like the others.

Next question- 'Without a Paddle' takes place in Oregon. Where was it filmed?

Anthony Edwards plays one of the "stoner dudes". Also, the football player whose car gets wrecked is played by Forrest Whitaker! AND, the science teacher's beautiful blonde wife was played by Lana Clarkson, the woman music producer Phil Spector went to prison for murdering.

As for "Without a Paddle": Back when it was heading for theaters, they ran a lot of behind-the-scenes on it. Wasn't it actually filmed in New Zealand? I thought it was because I remembered the Hercules series and "LOTR" trilogy being filmed there.

EDIT: Meanwhile, doesn't anyone know about the number/letter combination that is a sort of signature for George Lucas? I thought that one would be too simple.
