I catch this 1980 military/time-travel flick on re-run every now and then. I still enjoy it, and it's admittedly a "guy" movie. Since Hollywood seems to be remaking everything these days it would be cool to see a repop of this one. The USS Nimitz is still in service, but the A-7 Corsairs, A-6 Intruders and F-14 Tomcats are long gone. Guess it would be an all F/A-18 strike force.
I loved this movie as well, but I really wanted them to get in the fight with the Japanese fleet, so i was somewhat disappointed at the ending, still enjoyed it thoroughly

I know what you mean -- I recall one of the pilots asking in the scene just before they return to the carrier, "We're going to let the Japs do it again?!"
There was a series of books (can't remember the name) that you might like if you liked this movie. The premise is that a ship from even further in the future goes back to WWII. Only instead of not doing anything, they kick butt and take names.
I saw this in the theater as a youngster and recall the audience applauding as the command was delivered to "Splash the Zeroes" Have never seen/heard and audience applaud during the film. Ending of the film-yes. During the film-No.

This would make for SUCH a great alternate history idea. If our future we had been able to share advanced technology and perhaps defeated Japan entirely through conventional means, what if there never had been an atomic bomb dropped? How different the world not under an atomic cloud? Would they go back to the future, it would be a whole different one.
If it was one where some of them didn't exist, then would they in the past?
I LOVE timetravel paradoxes.
