Just found this interesting info...

The website for The American Film Institute (AFI.com) compiled lists in 2003 of the greatest heros/villians of films in last 100yrs.

The greatest hero:

*Atticus Finch, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (played by Gregory Peck)

The greatest villian:

*Hannibal Lecter, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (played by Anthony Hopkins)

It's hard to argue with those choices. My personal favorites would be:

Hero: Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), The Shawshank Redemption

Villain: Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), Night of the Hunter
