Normally, I would not approve of someone digging up a 4 year-old dead thread, but it took time for the movie studios to conduct an empirical test of the question. The answer is proved that a silent movie *can* work today, because one just did.
Obviously people are caught up in the nostalgia of it, next thing you know silents will be the new trend, like 3D last year or superhero movies or steady cams 15 years ago. Every other movie will be silent from now on. Can you imagine the next "Diehard" movie as a silent? We won't be hearing gunshots and explosions, it'll just be "Bang! Bang!" and "Boom!" flashed on the screen
If you have ever watched many silent films (not to mention "Singing' in the Rain") you will understand this movie. I loved the actors and of course Uggie!
Every Sunday night/Monday morning around midnight TCM shows silent movies. Tonight they are showing "The Crowd", one of the all-time best silent films.
Sometimes when I watch a current movie there is so much noise every second. I think the filmmakers should watch a few silent films, and remember that films are a visual medium.
many almost silent films have been done esp black and white and low budget and were very good.
