2011 Summer Movie Preview: 'Dramas and Indies'

Cannes-Hottest Ticket
Tree of Life

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

No need for the Academy Awards this year--donate the money to education. Philanthropy--it is good to give ---I feel better at least--no thanks, necessary. It seems like this concept has been overlooked by the highly evolved. If you are going to lead--do it by example.

Tree of Life looks pretensious and like it's trying to ride on the coattails of Mad Men.

Night in Paris looks like a star-studded comedy that will fail under the weight of so much talent and/or celebrity. And WTF is up with Paris' first lady being in a movie?!

The Deep End just looks stupid and the theme is tired.

Everything looks terrible. Really. Although, I will be looking forward to the last Harry Potter movie. And Hugo Cabret seems worth a look-see.

But, I agree: save the money and donate it to charity. And stop adapting fairy tales and comic books; it's so pathetic that Hollywood is out of great ideas and is just pumping out stuff to make $$$. Kids (and adults) are better off reading all of the originals that are being adapted.
