I watched some of it on TCM (I was off on the screening times - sigh). I have the older "authorised" version on dvd, not sure whether I'll get this new version when it comes out.

I watched this movie last spring in a movie art-house. I am somewhat amazed that on this forum with the very vocal ultra right conservatives here, there has been almost no mention on the strong message from this movie on the workers-bosses conflict and in the end the unification of the bosses and the workers for the common 'patriotism' of the city-state-country. Very late 1930's common political statement when the Socialist and Nationalist in Germany were still trying to working together to overcome the effects of Germany's economic problems and restrictions imposed by the allies of WW I.

The symbolism of the mechanical doll, of course, is Russian Communism with the doll's crater being a symbol of a Bolshevik anarchist; very evil indeed and dies from falling from the face of a gargoyle as his evil ugliness is reviled to the workers and bosses.

Thank you for these observations - so very true. My daughter who's a Film major is obsessed with German cinema of the 1930's (particularly Fritz Lang) has made all these observations and more regarding the symbolism of Metropolis.
