FORTUNE -- Back in the day, the knock on Hollywood was that it produced too many two-dimensional characters. Now moviegoers are beginning to grumble about paying up to see them in the third dimension as well.

I actually enjoy 3-D movies, especially IMAX. But seeing a movie at the theater these days is just not an option. Let alone the expense of a 3-D movie. Hell, I miss just being able to rent 5 movies for 5 days for 5 dollars. Looks as though, after two months, we will be able to this week.

The Last Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan's epic flop at the box office, has become something of a poster child for all the expensive over-hyped promise of 3-D technology. Roger Ebert, who recently called Hollywood's rush to 3-D every film "suicidal" and described 3-D pricing as "a form of extortion for parents," saved a special dose of venom for the 3-D'd Airbender, calling it an "agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented." The Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern was equally uncharitable, comparing Airbender to "a form of Chinese water torture."

Yay! May it die quickly and forever. I will dance upon 3D's grave.

It's dying because the majority of 3D movies suck. Instead of focusing on actual character development, storyline, creativity and other things that actually matters. Most of their time is put into special effects. Seriously, Step up in 3D????? FAIL.

I only enjoy 3-D movies when they are CG films which can be done RIGHT as every pixel can be controlled to give the full effect. Filming live action with 3 cameras just gives you a few "layers" making a crappy pseudo-3D effect.

Given the choice, I'll almost always pick 2-D over 3-D even for CG films, though. Those glasses are a pain and it's just not worth the extra cost.

Pretty much. Ask anyone who saw Avatar in 3-D and you will get a much better response than for that abortion of a movie Airbender. That movie had wonderful character development.

Moral of story: Give the characters more dimensions before giving the eyes more dimensions to see them.

A good movie will only be enhanced with 3D, 3D will not make up for a crappy movie. We saw Toy Story 3 in 3D and thought it was a great movie, it would have been great no matter which format you saw it in. We then saw Avatar and immediately kicked ourselves for not seeing it in 3D in the theater. I can only imagine what that one would have been like.

no doubt the 3D technology is amazing but i found that its not being used properly in some movies. Watching some movies without 3D were more fun whereas some were more interesting in 3D version.

It's cool, but the fun is awfully pricey, and I just don't think 3D is the be-all end-all they try to tell us it is.

Up was a wonderful movie, its 3-D was just okay. Ditto Toy Story 3.

Avatar's 3-D was cool, but the plot was so obvious and the characters were such predictable types that all I could do was focus on the visual aspect.

ETA: One movie I saw in which I really did enjoy the 3-D was Beowulf. (And it was a technical achievement that still felt a bit hollow.)
Even so, I won't be rushing off to the theater any time soon to pay that extra money. I have HD on my DVD player. And supposedly it is 3-D ready, too--for what that's worth.
