I just saw "Touching the Void," a 2003 documentary about two elite mountain climbers who summited a previously unclimbed peak in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. Ah, but on the way DOWN the mountain...
If you haven't seen it, the reenactment performances redefined "survival" to me, eat your heart out, Bear Grylls. Unbelievable will to live!
What other movies have impressed you about surviving under dire circumstances and beating the odds? (No zombies, vampires, or undead, please.)
(If there's already a thread about this topic, please point the way, as my search terms didn't unearth it.)
"Shackleton" with Kenneth Brannagh. One of the most incredible stories of survival and showing the resilience of the human spirit. Ernest Shackleton brought home every single one of his men relatively unharmed because unlike Scott of the Antarctic he had a little more common sense and was genuinely a great leader of men.
Great film but even better is "South" , Shackleton's book of his ill fated expedition.
Read it during a winter's storm and it becomes even more potent and the fantastic photos taken by Frank Hurley of the expedition look amazingly fresh considering they are almost 100 years old.
The ironic thing is that most of his men would have probably died during WW1 had they not been stuck on Elephant Island all those terrible months. Some did after coming home if I remember correctly in fact.
Both Shackleton and Touching the Void were great movies.
An oldie, but one of the first movies that I thought wasn't too bad in this vein that I can think of off the top of my head was the movie about the soccer team that crashed in the Andes and turned to cannibalism to survive...what was it called...Alive?
BlueWillowPlate, look at the times of our posts you quoted...his post wasn't up when I first brought this page up--dial-up is just wonderful. Apparently bs13690 and I think somewhat alike--which should be scary for him.
Thanks for the Alone in the Wilderness...I'd forgot about those.
Mission of the Shark:The Saga of the U S S Indianapolis is a true story about the sailors who gave their lives for freedom, and the horrible cost of war.Upon completing a top secret mission to deliver the A bomb to Tinian at the end of WWII, the U S S Indianapolis is torpedoed by enemy fire and sinks.Because of the classified nature of its mission, its surviving crew members become helplessly stranded in shark infested waters for five grueling days.Out of 880 men in the water only 316 survived. The sinking resulted in the most shark attacks on humans in history.1991 movie (T V) with Stacy Keach and Richard Thomas.
I have to admit a great fondness for DEATH HUNT. Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, and Carl Weathers in the same movie. The very concept ekes awesomeness.
I remember SOUTHERN COMFORT being pretty good, too, though I haven't seen it in ages.
