Shops around the country are reporting upturn, even in bad weather

PIERRE, S.D. - Joan Kohler is not a typical new scooter customer.

But the 51-year-old restaurant owner bought a candy-apple red Honda last week as worries about the price of gas overrode any trepidation about learning to drive it.

"Ninety-five percent of those who come in mention high gas prices"

And the other five percent mention "I want to look really cool!" ?

Scooters and motorcycles have been banned in many of the major cities in China because they are such bad polluters. It is hard to walk the roadways in many cities in Europe and Asia because of the small engine exhaust. I sure don't wish masses of small motor bikes on this country.

Most motorcycles that are being produced now have a catalyst. And they are not two strokes like they might have had in China.

Not sure about new scooters but that could also be the case.

Motorcyles wre realy cheap in this country prior to the 70's oil embargo. They were snapped up like crazy at that time and you guess it have never come down since.I see no catalyst on the bikes i have looked at.Some model have steel pack that the owners quiskly get rid of.

Way too dangerous to ride one in south florida. Too many idiot and unlicensed/uninured motorists. I had them back in the day, and love old scooters, but just cant imagine hitting a major street on one today. I do see more and more of them around tho now.
They are regulated just like anything else, the gross poluters arent allowed to be sold here. There ARE ones that are not supposed to be sold here, on craigslist/etc but you couldn't register it legally and get a tag etc for them.
If i could reasonably ride one to anywhere I needed to go, Id have one. But I value my life, at least a little.

Which would explain why the folks that work at the DMV always seem so boring!

And besides when is the last time you saw a motorcycle infront of the shrinks office? :P

While I certainly won't argue that motorcycles are more dangerous, driving cars in general is a dangerous activity but most of us get out there and do it.

Also any thought into the types of people that often ride motorcycles having any effect on this stat? Bigger risk takers (like the kid I saw yesterday wearing T-shirt, shorts and flip flops and pulling a wheelie out in front of traffic) or the old guys that have never ridden or haven't ridden in 20+ years and then go buy the biggest most powerful bike on the market to start with...........
