The other 15 states including California have no specific laws regarding the practice. Though whether its tolerated in practice appears in mixed results. With California being notoriously tolerant on the practice. There are states that while they have no official prohibition on the practice but cite motorcycles using the blanket codes for all drivers i.e staying in a single lane. While California does have such provision in its traffic code its seldom in practice used to nail motorcyclists for driving between lanes unless that cop thinks the biker was being exceptionally dangerous.

Though these 15 states including California all have a provision like CVC 21658.
Whenever any roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction, the following rules apply:

(a) A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.

Though whether a motorcyclist would be nailed for it do to the act of filtering can vary greatly. In practice its unlikely that a motorcycle safely riding past rows of stopped traffic would be nailed with such a violation but those splitting past fast moving traffic are much more likely to be nailed.

Though there had been videos of cars doing it as well, guess if there are no rules on it for any vehicle in those 15 states.
Guess its should be perfectly legal in California to do these as long as you don't force anyone off the road or hit any one.
As the code doesn't say whether its legal or illegal

I am surprised this black Mercedes Benz actually made it clearly through between some cars that were stuck behind a roadblock without hitting or scraping anything.

Over there it seems like if your bike, cyclo, rickshaw, car, van, taxi, truck, or bus fits go for it.
Look at this, everyone lane splits, not just the motorcycles or even the famous Indian three wheeled taxis, but everyone, even the big bus, as well as the trucks. Not certain what the official traffic code say about it though. Universally there are requirements in most areas to require vehicles to drive within a single lane

After 40+ years of riding, lane splitting, NO! Most driver aren't even aware of what it is, and educate them at my expense. Not to mention the inattentive of drivers for various reasons. Dont really want to lane split to increase my odds of landing on the road. Done that a few times. Thats enough.

Apparently this country has quite an issue with bikers who filter regardless of its legality. But the bikers don’t care. Quite a number of other countries on the same boat.

Apparently like skateboarding it’s going to happen no matter how many signs you post. On a trip to Miami and stuck in traffic on the bridge to Miami Beach, I saw plenty of filtering often on the right side between the lanes and the guardrail.

In England they call it filtering or “making progress” which is so fitting.

Been lane-splitting in CA since I got my first bike in 1971, (Honda Dream). Just retired and moved to Idaho. I really, really wish they allowed the practice here. Why own a Vespa if I can't drive like an Italian?
