Well guys, I think my engine is toast. I was crusing home from work the other day at about 35 mph and the engine just stopped. I couldn't get it to start again and I had to walk my scooter about 3 miles home. It had 3100 miles on it.
I just don't know what I should do at this point. It's a beautiful scooter, and I suppose I could have a new engine put in it. One shop said it would be like $800. It's just a chinese scooter though, I don't know if it's worth it. I could buy another scooter. Or maybe I should step up to a small motorcycle like a Rebel. Whatever I get next it's got to be RELIABLE and good quality.
I seriously would not waste another dime on it. If you want a scooter, stick with Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki brands. There are some others but those are your best bet, with large dealer service availability and dependability. The Chinese no-name brands are junk - I think you've learned that the hard way. JMO
Compared to a regular motorcycle a scooter seems more of a deathtrap since they're less powerful and less maneuverable and the rider is seated in a position that minimizes safety.
This is completely wrong. If you use it in right environment it is safer. It is MORE maneuverable by definition. This is one of the reason scooters are ideal for city transport, not motorcycles. Also, modern scooters are way more powerful then they used to be. Top of the line Vespa has 22HP, maxi scooters from Piaggio, BMW, Yamaha, Honda have way more. Seating position is safer because in case of crash the rider just rolls away instead of being pinned under a motorcycle. (been there, know that)
An advice about scooters- NEVER EVER buy chinese scooters and 'asian restorations" of classic scooters. If you want to have a reliable classic machine- find Vespa PX or Stella. You won't depend on mechanic if you have those scooters because they are manual shift with reliable and simple engine which is easy to maintain and fix.
I believe in the salvage theory. You can't go backward, only forward. Where can you get a used scooter like yours with under 6k miles on it, and it looks great, for only $800? Plus, you know everything about this scooter as you're the only driver so it has a good history. Get it fixed, ride it a while and sell it. Use that money to get a highway scooter. Have fun.
Might be worth trying to fix it yourself as its very small, Rod bearings top and bottom, set of new rings and either a rebore and a bigger piston or a new cylinder probably cost under $200. worth a try as it aint gonna get any more broke..
Your joking right? He doesn't have the mechanical skill level to check the oil and you think he's going to tackle replacing the rod bearings?
