Does anyone know of a good, reasonably priced ATV repair shop (or an individual with experience and necessary tools?) I have a Yamaha Warrior 4-wheeler that seems to need some transmission work. I live in Cartersville, Georgia, which is not far from Rome and the Cobb County area.
You might have better luck posting up in the Atlanta area forums. That said, why do you think your ATV needs transmission repair, usually the transmissions in any Yamaha are about bullet proof. Maybe your clutch needs adjusting, or is worn?
Are you using the correct oil? Are you using a motorcycle specific oil or something marketed mostly for cars?
Thanks for the tip. I actually did cross-post this in the Atlanta forum.
I suspected the transmission because it seems to be making a clicking sound, and it's difficult to get it into gear. It could certainly be a problem with the clutch, now that you mention it.
I had been using automotive oil in the past, but I should probably switch back to Yamalube, based on what you said. A friend of mine has the ATV at the moment, and I think he changed the oil. I'll ask him what he put in it.
Difficult to get into gear may just be cold oil and a clutch cable that has stretched to the point the clutch (free play) needs adjustment. If you have a clutch cable, a good cable luber that allows injecting a spray lube from an aerosol can (I like Tri-Flon) can help too.
Sometimes you can just adjust the thumb nut near the clutch lever, sometimes you have to adjust the mechanism on the side of the crankcase/transmission housing.
I can't say that the oil you are using is the problem, but since most bikes only hold a couple of quarts of oil anyway putting in Yamalube or some similar oil intended for both engine and transmission, rather than car oil intended only for an engine, is a cheap way to eliminate a variable.
Describe the ticking. Does it go with ground speed, engine speed, what happens if you pull in the clutch and kill the engine and coast?
