A few years ago I was pretty set on purchasing a motorcycle but due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to buy one. I've been getting the motorcycle bug again for the past few weeks, sort of like an itch that I can't seem to get rid of.

I just bought a new truck which has pretty much drained my "toy" fund. I don't really have the money to pay outright cash for a new bike and don't really like the idea of having payments even though I could pay it off within a span of a year or so.

Last night my friend rode his '08 HD Ultra over and we sat out and grilled some brats and had a few beers. After the alcohol was out of my system, I decided to take the bike around for a little while and fell back in love with motorcycles. I had one back in my high school days but the hobby took a backseat (no pun intended) to my college career. Now I'm nearing the ripe old age of 30 and I think a bike would be a perfect addition to my life, I really miss the feelings.

Have a Corvette which has been my toy for a while and I don't plan on trading that off anytime soon but I have the perfect spot in my garage for a shiny new Harley. A cherry-red Road King would do just right!

I used to know quite a bit about motorcycles but they've come a LONG ways since the 90's when I was riding one.

So please, talk me out of buying a new toy.

Can't talk you out of buying one since I love mine. But, I would say that financing toys is never a gret idea. It'll just be a monthly reminder of how much you're not getting out and riding enough (possibly), aside from the money lost paying interest.

But really, $5K or so will buy you a really decent bike depending on what you want. Even if you did finance it, it's still not a new Harley payment.

You really shouldn't get a bike. Just remember how much you hate the closeness with the open road; how much better if feels to be stuck inside an enclosed vehicle, safe and insulated from the world. Think of how much trouble it is to have to feel every curve. Doesn't it feel so much better to sit in your car, off in your own little world, not sensing your surroundings at all?

Gee you both are very helpful...at making me want one more! I just don't want a payment is all, I love my toys but always purchase them outright, never financed something not necessary in my life.

And $5K would get me a Honda Shadow or something along those lines but I truly would want a Harley if I were to get back in the saddle. I've been checking and even used HOG's are over $10K, not sure if I want to spend that money!

Just replace 'Mercedes' with 'Harley'

Not sure I can be of much help since I always advocate FOR riding.

Also if I were to buy a cruiser I'd rather have almost anything than a Harley. But that's me, I'm into the Kawi Mean Streak, Yamaha Warrior, Honda Magna, the older 80s cruisers, and others of that nature.

Here are some nice traditional cruisers though (notice the prices):

2005 Honda VTX 1300S (http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/mcy/1831019299.html - broken link)
Yamaha Roadstar 2001 (http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/mcy/1829332889.html - broken link)
2001 YAMAHA ROADSTAR 1600 (http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/mcy/1830468567.html - broken link)
2003 Honda Sabre 1100cc (http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/mcy/1830282123.html - broken link)

Buying a new bike means expenses -- depreciation expense, financing expense. Maybe not a solid move.

How about another idea: get an inexpensive 650 to 750 used cruiser, get comfortable on that smaller/lighter bike (give yourself several thousand miles), then sell that and weigh the options.

Thanks for the listings. That Honda Sabre is a very attractive bike and dirt cheap to boot.

Will someone tell me why Harley prices never seem to fall into an "affordable" range of around $7K? I'm talking the Softail and Touring models never seem to lose much value which is great if you're buying new but really sucks if you're a guy like me who wants a Harley but doesn't want the price of one?

I'm comfortable on a larger bike, it's sort of like riding a bicycle, you never really forget how to ride.

Might have to take a closer look at some of the Honda/Yamaha bikes in order to save some dough.

I agree, I really do like it.

I'd give these a look myself:

And don't forget these guys are very comfortable, inexpensive, and extremely competent: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/mcy/1820890880.html (broken link)

Thumbs up Honda Sabre

I agree, the Honda Sabre is a very nice bike. But I still prefer my 1984 V65 Sabre with the V-Four engine.

I don't think you really expect us to talk you out of buying a bike. You actually want reinforcement in getting one! Talking to other addicts isn't the way to get off of something.
