While I've lived in Montreal most if not all my life, I have much better memories of the January 1998 ice storm than of the March 1989 geomagnetic storm that also took down Hydro Quebec's grid, as I was not even quite 7 when the 1989 event happened. Having said that, is it my understanding that the ice storm of 1998 was worse (i.e. the power failure lasted longer) than the geomagnetic storm of 1989?
my daughter was born late Jan 98 just as the city was returning to normal after the ice storm, i was not in Canada 89 so have no knowledge of that event, but Jan 98 i will never forget
I wasn't living in Quebec in 1989. Was that the night the lights went out on an NHL game at the old Montreal Forum? I was actually watching the game live on TV when it happened.
The ice storm in terms of impact was many orders of magnitude greater than that power outage (which from what I gather lasted about 10 hours).
The deluge in the Saguenay in 1996 was also a very significant meteorological catastrophe.
During the ice storm, my in-laws were the only people on both sides of the family that had power. A transformer in my backyard had blown up taking out power for 10 days. Because only 4 houses were affected, we were low priority for Hydro to repair. Right after the storm, the temperature plunged to -20C so there was no way to stay in a house with no heat. At one point we were 9 people jammed into a 5 1/2 apartment for over a week.
