My wife who works in the LBPSB says they offered to share Riverdale with the French board like they do in several other schools but that plan was not good enough and the French board demanded the entire school.
The school was built in 1964 and expanded in 1970, doubling in size.
Peak student population in the early 70s at about 2400 students,
falling to about 1600 about ten years later, as many english speakers
started leaving the Montreal area after election of Rene Levesque in november 1976.
And they didn’t bother to try to make the “newer” half if the school
look like the the “older” half. A canadian made set in “america” movie
took advantage of that.
A zany high school football comedy movie starring Norman Fell and John Vernon.
It features the rivalry between two generic “american” high schools.
Scenes for one high school shot at older part of Riverdale, scenes for the second
high school shot at the newer section of Riverdale. Easily looking like two different schools.
While the movie is not exactly a four star film...it’s not quite a bomb either, it has a few funny scenes.
It actually was a precurser to more famous 80s high school movies like “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”.
Original movie title was “Crunch” ....on DVD it is known as “Heartbreak High”.
Not easy to get on either DVD or VHS, used copies are pricey, I managed to buy
it on DVD for $24, usually it is over $50.

I remember hearing about the film starring Norman Fell and John Vernon. A lot of locals
showed up to watch...
