To indirectly answer a question often asked here...
Would Montreal have had the inside track for Zenika if it was an anglophone city with only a residual rump of a francophone population (and a bitter edgy one at that)?

The fact that Montreal was predominantly French speaking probably did play a role in the facilitation of setting up a headquarters. Some staff from France are probably relocating to the new offices and would find it easier to settle down in a city that can speak French. Canada is lucky to have Montreal in this sense but IMO by no way is language a sole reason for choosing a city to set up a new headquarters. The article did say they have an office in Singapore which is a former British colony and whose official languages do not include French. Zenika could just as easily been tempted to set up in another North American city had that city offered the right amount of amenities. That's like arguing that Montreal has little to no chance at landing Amazon's second headquarters because it is predominantly French speaking.

Exactly. French people sell their expensive Parisan flats for half a million Euros, and then easily buy up an entire duplex in the Plateau in Montreal. Not to mention a car, cheap gas, much lower taxes. I know not all French people like Montreal, but for some it is quite alluring just for the cost of living and the quality of life one could afford with Euros.

Obviously language is not the sole reason but it's likely Montreal wouldn't have had an inside track like it did for this one without French.
And I happen to think that language is a big downside for Montreal's big for the Amazon HQ2.
Of course, language isn't the only factor.
The Canadian HQ for Ultramar (for a long time a British owned company, but now owned by American Valero) is located in Quebec, while the Canadian head office for the French petroleum giant Total is in Calgary, Alberta.
But by and large, French companies tend to have their Canadian base in Quebec, and American companies usually choose southern Ontario for their Canadian HQs.
For those American companies moving to Quebec if they are relocating a lot of management or high tech employees to a new plant in Quebec they will have to abide by Quebecs work place language laws that go like this = https://www.educaloi.qc.ca/en/capsul...rkplace-quebec Wonder how many companies thinking of expanding have bypassed the linguistic bs and just gone elsewhere in Canada as a consequence.

We already knew that companies for whom having English as an internal operating language is very important tend to bypass Montreal/Quebec. It's even mentioned by me in a post just above yours.

I was using the theme to segue into that link i posted that shows the linguistic complexity of doing business in Quebec. We have many readers here who may not be from Quebec and be unaware of just how far Quebecs linguistic fundamentalism goes. Links like the ones i provide give them an idea.
