I thought this was going to be a thread about politics. That's a can of worms you don't want to open.
As for political correctness, though, Montreal is very easygoing. Very casual and relaxed.
Yeah, I live in the Pacific Northwest and while it's "liberal" here on some select issues, it's very PC and materialistic too; people don't want to put their money where their mouth is and there's a strong anti-tax movement which I consider a pretty right wing thing. Are people in Quebec generally OK with paying their taxes?
You have to understand that Quebec also have to deal with separatism, in addition to the conventional left-right (in Quebec, left-right is framed primarily in terms of economic issues).
Montreal southeast boroughs are more separatist than anywhere else in the city...

I was born and bred in Montreal and was so happy to be living in the States for a decade where the taxes were "normal" -- and I lived in Connecticut (where property and gas taxes were among the worst in the country) and in Massachusetts (aka Taxachusetts). But even compared to CT and MA, Quebec taxes are ridiculous. Now I'm back here and paying them again.
Yeah, yeah, socialized medicine. Whatever.
I can't speak for everybody but I'm not OK paying my taxes. I do it, of course, but it's a serious gouging and I don't think that I'm getting any bang for my (tax) buck.
Montreal is a great and fun city! There is a lot to do there that is fun. I stayed in a B&B in St. Catherine, and that part of town is liberal to say the least. It remind me San Francisco. The place is beautiful and has an island with a zoo, an amusement park and a casino! They have an incredible stadium there that was once built and used for the Olympics, too.
People were light and open minded. Oh, and almost everything there is French. Don't have money to afford France, well this is France light. No Eiffel Tower, but you know you are in another country. Added bonus people speak English, too.

Visiting a place and actually living there can be two different things.
Take that Olympic stadium for example it sits empty and serves no real purpose other than an expensive landmark that has taken the taxpayers 30 years to pay off= Quebec's Big Owe stadium debt is over - Montreal - CBC News
