Hello, I have an upcoming business trip to Montreal and am very much looking forward to visiting your city. One thing I am curious about though is driving, as I have heard that pretty much all of the signage is in French. Also, I wasn't sure if any of the laws or "driving customs" are different there than in the U.S. I am from Atlanta, so I am used to driving in a big city, but I have never driven anywhere outside of the U.S. Even though the signs are in French, do they still look familiar....I mean, for example, is a stop sign still a red octagon?

I know a lot of people suggest just using public transportation, but I have to go to several locations outside of the Montreal city limits, such as Laval and Boucherville. I was thinking of maybe just using public transportation or Uber for the first couple days when I am going to be in downtown Montreal and then getting a rental car for when I need to go out to the suburbs. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of things I should be aware of. Thanks!

Most of the signs are pictograms and easy to understand,the red stop sign is all too apparent and speeds are in Kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour.
Where you might have a problem is deciphering parking signage.=

In Montreal proper the bus and subway can get you most anywhere you want to go=

I'd be interested in what you think of our fair city.

All of the road signs look just like in the US, you shouldn't be confused! You'll need to just learn a few easy French words and driving will be no sweat.

Centre-Ville = downtown (like center of the ville)
Sortie = exit. So, as in highway exit.
Ouest = West
Est = East
Nord = North
Sud = South

Nice, easy, and intuitive.

I think videos like this are boring, but this may put you at ease by getting a chance to see what driving would look like.

Thanks for the replies. One other quick question if you don't mind... I had read online that you can't turn right on red in Montreal but someone else told me that wasn't the case anymore. Which is correct?

You cant turn right on a red light on the island of Montreal,off island you are free to do so unless there is signage saying otherwise.That signage will look like this=
