I wanted to have a sense of what the living costs are in montreal.
I live in NYC and work here as well ( I am hoping no other city will surprise me in terms of living costs).
I am into the tech field working as a consultant for banks mostly. Salary range for this skill set is 90 to 110K per annum USD for 6-8 years if experience and a bachelor or masters degree ( 6 years experience with masters).
The living expenses are crazy here in NYC.
Rent - $2000 to 3000 per month for 1 bedroom apt rent
grocery - $200
Eating out - $200
Electricity - $30-50
taxes are pretty high . Approx 30%for this salary range
entertainment - $100
health insurance - $800 ( if not provided by employer)
shopping - not too bad
Phone- 100 per month. Everything high speed and unlimited
tv and phone 70 to 100
no car for me so 100 per month for subway expense
This above is a rough estimate for my living. What would this translate in montreal?
I'm thinking the salary won't be as high in terms of the number (closer to 60-80 CAD?)
Location: Montreal -> CT -> MA -> Montreal -> Ottawa

I lived in the States for a long time and, although I owned my house there, I can tell you this:
- Your rent will be cheaper
- Your electricity will likely be the same or cheaper (it depends how the place is heated)
- Food here will cost you MORE here, as will basics such as pharmacy stuff (shampoo, etc...)
- Phone, TV, Internet -- depending on what you opt for will likely cost you a bit more here
- Sales tax here might be a little shocking to you
I can't speak to insurance or taxes, since I'm self-employed.
The big ticket item is your rent. You can find a really great place here for $1000/month, so the additional cost of everything else won't be a big deal for you.
Montreal has a good cost of living to salary ratio despite the salaries being lower than other cities. The taxes and low salaries all still equate to lower cost of living and great quality of life in comparison to other cities. I think you'll be fine.
that sounds good. I will check some salary comparison websites to g et à number on how much my salary will translate in montreal.
Yes I speak French but not fluent. If we know the DELF levels then I am B2. Ofcourse the last time I visited montreal I found the qubecois accent a little hard to understand.
sorry guys but I'm gonna try regardless :-)
I will have to brush up before an interview. Since my industry is heavily E glish focused I may be ok with English as well.
Your salary is going to be lower, I would say $70-$80K CAD. Considering the exchange rate this will be more like $55-$60K US so almost half what you make now. Also way less job opportunities than New York.
Restaurants and groceries will be more expensive, rent way, way cheaper.
If you get 110K USD in NY and 110K CAD here in Montreal , per month you will get roughly 900-1000 $ less in hand (free healthcare cost). Rest whatever DawnMTL is said is applicable. electricity is cheap and heating is mostly provided. Health insurance is covered by RAMQ and pretty much every employer provide additional insurance for the things that are not covered under RAMQ.

That number sounds very disappointing! I was hoping for 95 CAD at the very least.
