Angelique Kidjo will be performing for free as part of the Festilval les Nuits d'Afrique tonight at 21h45 at the Place des Festivals. Fantastic performer. I highly recommend catching her show.
Last night I went to the Mayfair Tavern in Pointe Claire, for their regular Saturday Night Blues Jam night. Holy crap!! It was amazing! At one point there were 15 musicians jamming on stage. Jerry Mercer from April Wine was there. Tex Harwood, the bassist for Mahogany Rush was there. My good buddy, Edwin Orion Brownell, a classical pianist who plays at Place des Arts was there.
From trumpets to saxophone to cow bell....they made beautiful music. More and more musicians kept showing up as the night wore on.
It a regular happening in a dive tavern in the West Island, but you should check it out. You might get lucky.

Wow, I lived in the West Island for 22 years and never even heard of this place, will have to check it out this weekend.

I never heard of it before, either. My friend Edwin was playing keyboards so I tagged along. At first I thought "What a dump! This night is going to be a bust." But hot damn, it was some of the best music I ever heard. They started playing at about 20h30 and when I left at 01h00, they were still going strong, with no breaks. New people with instruments kept showing up. At one point there were five guitarists and three drummers. A tiny wizened man showed up with his trumpet, and he looked like an old junkie, but he made that instrument sing!
I have no idea if it's the same every time. I guess it's the luck of the draw as to who is going to show up. Nobody is scheduled to play. There weren't a lot of people in the bar, but the musicians were there just to jam and have fun.
I'll definitely be going back.
I will be finally visiting Montreal with my girlfriend next weekend. We know of the landmarks and cool, entertaining stuff to see/do (go on Mount Royal, check out the underground mall, stroll on st. Catherine, etc..), are there any special, one of a kind events going on this month?
Merci!
That weekend has now come and gone, how was your trip, where did you go what did you see? any pros/cons tips or tricks for future visitors to Montreal?
I went to the Monkland Street Fair tonight. Interesting. I finally saw the food trucks up close and personal. They had everything from crepes to salmon tartare tacos. Can't tell you what the food was like, as I wasn't hungry, but it seemed expensive. Lots and lots of dogs for some reason. I'm covered in pit bull spit from lots of canine kisses.
One Of These Nights was the Eagles cover band that played on stage. They were surprisingly good. Tomorrow night it's Santana, from 20h00 to 22h00. You should check it out.
Something seemed "different". I finally realized what it was. Everything was in English.
