Anyone remember the old multi-story wooden sheds that used to be behind low rise apartment buildings? A 3-plex apartment block would have a 3 story shed behind it with wooden gangways going across from each balcony. They were banned and removed in the late 1960's due to the fire hazard. Maybe I'm just looking up the wrong keywords but I can't find any photos on Google.

This kind of structure? many changed from wood to this kind of corrugated metal product or plastic siding....

A Google search of "Verdun Montreal lanes" is where i got these,But you are right they are few and far between.

That's it. They must have been brought up to code to survive. Here's one under "Hangar de ruelle", it looks much sturdier and better engineered than what I remember:
