At one time, two of Montreal's major employers were railroad-related - the Montreal Locomotive Works (later Bombardier) and Canadian Pacific's Angus Shops. I wonder if the employees had to speak English in the workplace.

It would have varied but English would have been very predominant. Meetings, instructions and manuals were likely all in English.

In more than a few places staff were required to speak English at all times when working, and only allowed to speak French when on break. In some cases staff were not allowed to speak French on company property - even when on break.
