They are an extremely conservative Jewish sect. They are very non-compliant to society in general. The local school district did not provide bus service because the students refused to get on a bus driven by a female driver.

They have also branched out outside of NYC and have founded communities in the Catskills NW of the city. I believe some of them are pretty much self-contained distinct municipalities.

I lived close to the one near Monroe, NY. They were not good neighbors. It is off-topic, but a quick Google search should give a couple of good stories of land grabs and corruption.
