How many weeks do usually companies give to their employees?
This is what they say on the website of Commission des normes du travail:

Quote:
Uninterrupted service for one employer:

Less than 1 year.......................2 weeks
1 year to 5 years......................2 weeks
5 years and more.......................3 weeks
This applies for non-unionized workers.
How about the unionized?

Anyway, this is just a law but how is it in reality?
How many weeks of vacation do you have?

2 weeks is not that much.
In many European countries there are laws which guarantee a minimum o 4 or 5 weeks of vacation.
In France, you even get 7 weeks (for those who are willing to work 39 hrs a week instead of 35).

I am not taking into account public holidays which are additional 5-14 days depending on a particular country in Europe or province in Canada...

It varies, but a lot of unionized workers get anywhere between 3 to 5 weeks vacation to start, some even more depending on seniority.

As for saying 2 weeks is not much for non-union laborers, you have to look at the big picture. Québec is in North America, not Europe, and must therefore remain competitive with the other jurisdictions on the continent to retain businesses and to keep its economy going. Common wisdom here is that 2 weeks is adequate for someone that's in his/her first few years of service to a given firm - you may not agree, but that's the way it is.

I personally get 10 days (which is really 2 weeks if you count the weekends), and I've been at my current job (customer service) for 9 months. I have trouble finding time where I'll be able to take it all off! I really can't imagine what I would do with 4 weeks!

Speaking generally you would get 2 weeks of vacation time plus 4% vacation pay for your first 5 years on the job, after which every increment of 5 years would bring you an extra week and an additional 2% vacation pay, this is very general and doesnt apply to every company,
My unionized job had me at 7 weeks off and 14% vacation pay after 30 years of service.
