My husband's job would like him to take a temporary assignment in Dorval (we are from the US) and we have been researching places to live. We do not want to live in a suburban area and would prefer dowtown Montreal. We are concerned about the commute time bewteen downtown and Dorval. Does anyone know the average commute from Downtown to Dorval in the morning and then from Dorval to Downtown in the evening? Or are there any areas with nice housing that would be ideal for a younger couple with no kids that would be an easy commute to Dorval? We would like to be within walking distance to restaurants/bars/shopping.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Downtown to Dorval?
20 minutes or 45 minutes in rush hour.

One of the problems with your plan is that the highway from Dorval to Downtown, the 20, is going to have alot of traffic on it over the next year or so because of construction planned for the Turcot interchange. Your Husband's best bet would be to take the commuter train from Downtown to Dorval which is super fast because, geographically, Dorval isnt' very far. Maybe 15-20 minutes. If you do choose to drive you'll be going against the flow of Rush hour traffic so that should also ensure the commute isn't too bad, but it is a particularly treacherous highway for traffic jams.
