Hello,

I am planning on making a trip in May 19th -27th to see your lovely state. I am just wondering about the roads and whether or not the route we have tentatively planned will be OK.

We are looking to fly into Billings and then head to GNP, then travel down to Yellowstone and on to Grand Teton, then back to Billings. I am aware that May is not the best time of year to see these areas but we are restricted to the dates. I was wondering if any of the roads will be closed due to the time of year?

If you have any suggestions I am all ears!

Thanks

you shouldn't have any trouble traveling througout the state just can't get all the way through yellowstone park cause they don't open up the upper part until after memorial day and same with the upper part of GNP but there's still lots to see in the parks that will be open. best to call the national parks directly to get weather updates but can also go to their web site and you'll get to-the-hour conditions and webcams to see different places first hand in the parks. have a safe trip!

The lodges in GNP may or may not be open that time of May also but the lower elevation roads are open and it is a nice time to see it out of the busy summer season:

You can watch updates of how far along they are on plowing the Going To The Sun road:

Most of the roads will be fine with these exceptions.

* The Going to the Sun Road in Glacier won't be open until mid-June at the earliest.

* The Beartooth Hwy going into NE entrance at Cooke City won't be open, most likely mid-June.

Believe it or not, I-90 was closed this morning due to white out conditions. Was closed from Sheridan Wyoming to Lodge Grass MT.

I know this is not on the OP's route, but just wanted to point out that this area of the country can turn on you, at any minute.

We went to Glacier last year about the third week of June. Going to the Sun road fully opened about 6 hours after we had to leave. We knew that was going to be the case but couldn't go another time. We had a great time anyway. We did half of our time on the east side of the park, then drove around and did the other half on the west side.

It didn't look any too happy further west, either. And this morning was the first time I've seen ice on the Gary Cooper bridge all winter! Er, whatever season this is... I don't think it's quite Construction yet.
