Not a bad place. Lot's of recreational options. Some decent places to eat but not on the same scale as Bozeman, Billings, Missoula or even Great Falls. I live north of town near the Causeway between Lake Helena and Hauser Lake. I can take my 4 wheeler and be on the ice fishing in 10 minutes or less. This side of Helena is pretty ideal to get on some water quickly. I can hitch the boat or kayak and head North 30 minutes and get on Holter (which is simply drop dead gorgeous)- Hauser almost immediately from my house and a 30 minute drive south get on Canyon Ferry.

I'm an avid bird hunter (got 3 GSP's who tell me so). There are some grouse around in the mountains, but the best bird hunting is either far east or north east. I usually go all the way to Plentywood several times for pheasant. Or between Malta and Glasgow for sharpies, huns and pheasant. Duck and goose- I'm in Glasgow. We've got a group of old white haired hunters that love that cold weather crap! Truly that's one of the greatest spots for waterfowl- that central flyway just off the Missouri. It beats the snail snot out of Helena. However Helena winters are generally less windy and not as cold as Glasgow (which I'll bet is similar to ND). In fact only 2 winters in the past 10 have I really needed to 'push' snow.

I've been here about 10 years now and I like it. My wife and I have talked about 'where to retire'- and we think right here is about as good as it gets. We can be in Yellowstone NP or Glacier in about the same time- I can be in Glasgow in 6 hours, Billings in a little over 3, Bozeman in 2... It's a pretty decent place to be centrally located to a lot of what Montana has to offer. Most of the friends I have generally don't talk politics, so I don't take the pulse on that stuff. Ironically I have a crotchety old cowboy neighbor (and he was a cowboy/ranch hand for Seiben ranch) and is VERY political and VERY liberal. Go figure huh? He's also a die hard elk hunter and has some fantastic mounts in his log house. Honestly I wouldn't let that sort of thing drive where I want to live. Most people here are 'live and let live'.

Anyway- some bird porn for ya!
