I had the opportunity to visit Powell about 4 years ago and had wonderful help in their Homesteader's Museum finding more information about my relatives. Back in 1959 I visited my Great Aunt in Powell, when my family went on a road trip to Yellowstone. What a tough life, but a good one too! I admire these fine people more than anyone can imagine. Thanks again!

Loved the show

My great-great grandfather was in the Indian Fighting Army in the 1870s, and was apparently stationed at Fort Ellis Montana, (near Bozeman) and when discharged went home and brought his family to Montana. They were here sometime between 1879 and 1885, the dates aren't exact, but they were here prior to statehood.

They settled in the Paradise Valley south of Livingston and raised potatoes they sold to the miners in Butte.

My cousin ended up with the original place, and still lives on part of it, but the land taxes became so high in that area he couldn't afford them from what he could produce on the place, so he sold some of it into a development.
Sad, but not uncommon.

Great show to watch there, really has a good representation of how the descendants of the pioneers feel about the land here.

Well worth the watch.

What's the oldest still-standing building in Montana, and the oldest still-extant homestead, anyone know?

There's a house west of Belgrade, on Thorpe Road, that's listed in the GIS as built in 1870. It's still standing, but not for long... in the past few months it's developed a decided list to port, like the frame's rotted off at the bottom.
