They need to be open 5 am until at least 8 pm Monday through Saturday. They also refused to invest in the property for years while focusing only on Baldwin properties. With all the office workers returning and new residents I think the demand is there.

I agree.

754 Government street was sold. Out of town developers will convert the building into residential lofts.

Excellent, looks like you can add 3-6 lofts on it

Well the Gayfer’s project is pretty much dead, the council Voted 5-2 on holding it over for 2 weeks, with Smalls and Reynolds voting no in order to go ahead and kill the project. Most of the council members seem more keen on “Plan B” which just seems to be breaking up the money into smaller projects

It’s for the best. There’s a ton of problems with the idea of putting affordable housing downtown. Out of all the problems the city has, this does not rank anywhere near the top of the list. I’d like to see the city give that money to restore Mobile and see what they can do with 8 million in a revolving fund. That could provide affordable housing as well as speed up their efforts to stimulate growth in oakdale, and potentially let them branch out to new neighborhoods like the campground, maysville, or south of the loop

Good, the old Gayfers building was historically the heart of retail in Mobile. It should be used for retail or apartments that are not HUD related.

I agree. That project just didn't seem to fit what is already happening in the downtown area.

They should look at what other cities are doing -- encourage developers to have a few units that are affordable in their various projects. Affordable housing doesn't have to be at the extreme bottom of the price range, it could be priced at a level that is closer to market-based rents yet still affordable for many renters. That helps to remove the stigma that often comes along with these type of affordable housing projects.

Infill of existing neighborhoods, as mentioned above, is critical and will help make the city more robust and thriving.

Awesome, to tack on to that, another large downtown properties is going up for sale

Wing's of Life is relocating from Downtown to Tanner Williams/West Mobile and will be selling their downtown location for $2.6 million @ 800 St Louis Street. With several investors already interested in the property
