HIS CAREER ENDED FOR AWHILE

Henry Clay Johnson was the colored Berry Wall of St. Joseph. His diamonds were big, bright and genuine. His clothes were fine, new and paid for. The other day Judge Culver sentenced Johnson to seven years in the penitentiary for burglary and larceny. When arrested he had $7,000 worth of stuff in his possession.

I had to look up Berry Wall to find out who he was. He was a fancy dude.

LEADER OF BANDITS KILLED

Disastrous Attempt Of A Gang To Terrorize Cedar City

Jefferson City, Mo., Jan. 18---A gang of desperadoes appeared in Cedar City yesterday and undertook to run the town. Their leader was shot and killed by Charles Gilbert, of Fulton, and four were arrested. They were brought here and placed in jail.
This morning they were removed to the Calloway County jail, at Fulton. It is believed that they are the train robbers who held up the Missouri Pacific train on Thursday. On one of the men $1,500 was found. An inquest was held this morning over the body of the dead bandit. There is great excitement at Cedar City over the capture.
It is known that there were eight men in the gang altogether. Two escaped, one is dead and five are in jail. The fifth man was arrested this morning, when he called at the jail to see the others. He is a brother of the man who was killed.

THIEVES GO TO A LOT OF TROUBLE FOR CAR

Car thieves who stole a 1968 Pontiac from the 200 block of North Sprigg street earlier this week went to a lot of trouble. The car had two flat rear tires, no battery, and no ignition.
Police speculated that the Firebird convertible which was parked behind the Meyer Realty Co., awaiting repairs was towed from the scene.
" It would have had to have been towed off," reported Mrs. Mary E Meyer, 208 North Park, whose husband, Thomas M Meyer, owns the car. " Unless of course, they wanted to put all the parts back in it."
The green with black top convertible had been parked behing the realty office, 230 North Sprigg, for several months.
The car, which also had no license plates, was last seen Monday afternoon and discovered missing Tuesday morning. The car was accessible through an alley behind the realty company.

TRIED TO CUT HIS THROAT

When arrested at Thirteenth and Pine streets yesterday, shortly after noon, Otto Theimach drew a knife and attempted to cut his throat. Theimach was arrested by Detectives McGrath, McCarthy, Murphy and Shea. He is charged with forgery.
On May 24, 1902, Theimach passed a worthless check on the Famous Dry Goods Company for $30. Since then the authorities have been looking for him. It is thought that he has been working in other places besides St. Louis.
Clarence Jackson, assistant manager of the Famous, cashed the check. Theimach used the signature of George V Sallee, who identified it as a forgery. Yesterday afternoon a warrant was issued by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Dalton against Theimach charging him with forgery. When Theimach was searched he had on his person several other checks with signatures which he admitted to be forgeries. The checks will be held as evidence.
