THREE FOOTPADS CHOKE AND ROB AGED CITIZEN

John Newhouse, 70 years old, was dragged into a stable in the rear of No. 1300 South Second street at noon yesterday by 3 men, choked almost unconscious and robbed of $2.75 and a pocket knife.
John Cleary, a teamster, living on Howard street, Thomas Boone, who says he lives at No. 2214 O'Fallon street, and James Ryan, giving his address as No. 1012 Arsenal street., have been arrested and partly identified as the culprits.
Newhouse identified Cleary. Fred Mussler of No. 1310 South Second street, identified the other two as having been in the neighborhood with Cleary.
Newhouse staggered to the Third District Police Station and after reporting the matter to the police, was sent to his home at No. 1723 South Eleventh street. Cleary was taken there and identified.
In detailing the robbery, Newhouse says one of the men held his arms while the second choked him and the third searched his pockets. They left him lying on the floor and he was unable to pursue. The shock has left him in a serious condition on account of his age.

The Sullivan Mo News February 13, 1947

Washington, Mo.,----The Blue Goose café on East Fifth street was looted early last Sunday morning and the contents were damaged considerably. Mrs. Maud Blankenship, owner of the café, stated that the thieves broke a window in the back of the building and gained entrance that way. She also reported that the electric wall clock, to which a night light is attached, has stopped at 12:15 am. She assumed the thieves had pulled the plug to darken the building.
The thieves took about $1.50 from the cash register and then ruined the cash register considerably. Then they ruined the nickelodeon, owned by Bueschers but did not get the money. After they had broken the pinball machine, also owned by Bueschers, they took about $20,00 out of it. They rifled through her desk, taking all of her papers out of her drawers and strewing them all over the café. The floor was covered with half-smoked cigarettes and half-eaten candy bars. The damage was done with utensils taken from the kitchen. Mrs. Blankenship is offering a $50 reward for the arrest and conviction of the culprits.

FUGITIVE CAUGHT AT MANILA

San Francisco, Mar. 23---The military authorities at Manila have a prisoner who will be sent to this country shortly if his identity can be established, who is believed to be Bill Redmond, the notorious outlaw, who is accused of several murders, who escaped from the Rough Riders when recognized by a comrade and who was, in 1898, accused of murdering a Mrs. Schumacher in Kansas City with the aid of Jack Kennedy, who is now in the penitentiary for train robbery.
The man who caused Redmond's arrest is an ex-Pinkerton detective and a member of the United States Army Corps in the Philippines. It is believed that he has been on Redmond's trail for some time. The prisoner denies his guilt, but the detective declares that he made no error and that he has the right man.

Kansas City, Mo., Mar. 23---Jim Redmond and John Kennedy were indicted in February 1898, for the murder of Miss Emma Schumacher. Redmond escaped and was next heard of with the Rough Riders in Cuba. Kennedy was never tried for murder.
Miss Schumacher was shot to death on the night of December 8, 1897, in her grocery store, by two young men who tried to rob her. She shot at the robbers and wounded one of them before she was killed.

Lincoln Nebraska State Journal April 22, 1900

Kansas City, Apr. 21---Jim Redmond, alias Mike Seville, arrested in Manila two months ago on a charge of murder and who was brought here last night from San Francisco, admits his identity, but denies complicity in the murder of Emma Schumacher.
The murder was committed in 1897 in a robbery and Jack Kennedy, a notorious train robber, now serving a term in the Missouri penitentiary, and Redmond were indicted for the crime. Redmond has been chased all over the country. He served through the Cuban war with the Rough Riders and was a member of the Sixth Artillery in the Philippines when arrested.

VICTIM OF AN OLD GAME

The police are searching for a man who fleeced Miss Sophia Wenger of No. 2800 North Grand avenue out of $20 Saturday afternoon. The stranger entered the store kept by Miss Wenger and asked that she give him two $10 bills or a $20 for some change.
Miss Wenger handed him a $20 bill. He placed it in an envelope and sealed it, handing her the silver money. She counted the change and found it $1 short. She called his attention to it and he stated that the man who had sent him after the money had made a mistake. He then asked Miss Wenger to hold the money in the envelope until he got another dollar for her. Later, Miss Wenger discovered that the envelope contained only blank pieces of paper.

People still fall for that one.
