Do you live in Smithville, MO? If you do, it's not a tornado siren you're hearing

tornado season usually officially begins for chasers around March and lasts a couple of months. we do have them in fall, but not as often. i have had 2 houses blown away and rode out 3 others. i still poop my pants when the sirens go off. the best thing you can do is to inform yourself on tornados and be prepared. you don't want to be panicky when it does happen. i found what works for us it at the beginning of every spring pack a bag with some snacks, water, a couple of blankets, flashlights, weather radio and batteries and also, a change of clothes (most the time your in pjs when it happens, lol). sturdy shoes are a good idea in case you have to climb your way out and pick through debris. it makes me feel calmer knowing all i have to do is run for the basement. recently some towns have gotten overzealous with the sirens, so not everytime you heard a siren when it is storming will it mean there is a tornado heading toward you. its understandable though considering the seasons we've had in recent years. i've been here all my life and i don't need sirens and "tornado ted" (weatherman) to know we are in for a fun filled night of twister action. if this makes you feel any better statiscally speaking, deaths are minimum compared to earthquakes and hurricanes. oh, an if you are in your car, i found out one time, most strangers are more than happy to let you take shelter in their home when one is coming. i had 2 babies with me though and i don't think a ditch would have done it for me!

edit: oh i forgot to mention. if one passes close by, the danger is not always over when its gone. the big march 2004 tornado that went through battlefield strung debris miles. we lived about 2 miles from the path. my hubby was hit by a piece of tin roof that fell from the sky after the tornado was gone. he was pretty messed up. so wait until you stop hearing debris fall before going outside.

Pack your bag with a heavy old jacket and bicycle helmet for each person. Those will prevent a lot of injuries from flying debris.
