Definitely check out the MU museum of art and archeology on 9th st near campus. Kind of an unknown gem. There's also an Entomology Museum if your kids are into bugs.

Someone mentioned Les Bourgeois earlier. They also have a full service restaurant which IMO ranks as high as any of the top spots in Columbia plus a great romantic view of the setting sun. Also for fine dining, check out the Wine Cellar and Bistro on Cherry St downtown (it has a nice bar also).

A new place that recently opened on 7th St is Forge and Vine - they make some spectacular drinks, and if students are there they usually go upstairs and leave the downstairs bar to the adults. The food is good but a bit overpriced and service can be spotty.

There's karaoke at the Arch and Columns Pub on the Business Loop, but they cater mostly to gay clientele (not that there's anything wrong with that, it just may not be your speed)

Plenty of places for kids to explore - Rockbridge State Park and Devil's Ice Box have some great hiking areas, Stephens Park is neat and offers swimming during the summer months, regular summer events a Flat Branch Park, downtown festivals every Thursday night in June and September.

And speaking of institutions, Jack's Gourment (Coronado) Restaurant for some reason gets rave reviews from the townies who have lived here forever. I think it's nasty and tacky (plenty of red naugahyde).

BTW, have you visited the Chamber's web site? They have a whole calendar of stuff: Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau

A place to check would be Columbia Public Schools Career Center. They offer lots of adult education activities in arts.

Columbia Area Career Center :: Professional and Community Education

Also check out the Columbia Art League

Default Restuarants

I agree with most of the posts about Murry's. It is one of my favorites and kids are good but would probably only do a weekend night with the kids.

My husband and I both like Upper Crust (multiple locations). They have great salads, bread, pasteries, etc. Also, if you ever need a specialty cake you can't go wrong with an Uppper Crust order!

If you enjoy a good pizza with the kids then you can't go wrong with Shakespeares. We also enjoy the weekend buffet at Truman's (West Broadway next to HyVee). Good luck and welcome to Columbia!

My favorite things about Columbia are: Ragtag Cinema Cafe (although I liked the old one better than the new one), the pizza and other food at Flat Branch, and Stevens Lake Park (the trails are wonderful around the lake-they also have a fun water park in the summer for kids for free). Though it is a chain, I also really liked Houlihans. Last I knew, the 63 Diner had closed. Another fun thing to do in the summer is to attend the movies in the park series. Also, the Christmas market in Herman is a really fun day trip.
