My wife and I lived in the Dora area (40 miles west) in the 70's but had to leave to find work. We had a good life in southern California and raised 3 great children. We retired to the Ozarks 2 years ago and love it again. Now we live 7 miles south of West Plains. We have good doctors but being so close to town is not where we want to be, but it sure is handy. There is a VA clinic if your a vet. I do miss being so far from creeks.

isn't the Seven Forks River just east of there, or is it the Eleven Point or something like that.

We DO have good doctors and a good hospital in West Plains. My husband just had a triple bypass (11/30) and the care he received at OMC was excellent. The cardiac surgeon was not only skillful in the operating room but concerned and attentive during his hospital stay. He flat-lined twice in the ICU before the surgery and the quick response and skill of the staff kept things going.

Yesterday I drove through West Plains. Our company has a job opening there. It seemed a good idea to check the area out before applying for the job.

First impression was how colorful the area is already. Spring looked to be in full swing. What kind of trees produce the violet colored blossoms? They're everywhere and look fabulous.

The rock cuts are cool. It looks like the area is on a limestone layer.

What is the red soil? At first I thought it to be something on the order of Georgia clay. Upon a closer look it seemed to be some kind of granite.

West Plains doens't seem to be a big money town which is fine with me. People certainly were friendly which is a big plus.

The city has a very large medical center for a town if only 12,000. Is it safe to assume it serves a much larger rural area?

Speaking of rural areas I noticed most of the roads are paved.

Some of the neighborhoods looked a bit run down. However sprinkled in the midst were homes that have been well cared for. Real estate prices were ok but property taxes were much more reasonable than what I've seen in the Wisconsin and Iowa markets.

I also checked out Rolla and Houston. They're small and rural and that's fine with me.

The only thing I forgot to check out was the housing rental situation. Is there an adequate supply of rentals to get one by until buying a home?

The trees are likely red buds. The Ozark region is made up of a karst topography which is generally many layers of limestone alternating with veins of marble or granite and toped with a thin layer of topsoil. Forage crops are the main agriculture since the soil's too thin to support much else besides the native trees and plants. However, there are loads of horses and cattle as well as great deer and turkey hunting. Deeper into rural areas you'll find a lot of dirt and gravel roads which are fun to explore. There is red clay.

As for the rest, I'll leave that to the native West Plains posters to answer. I'm west of there on Table Rock Lake.

Thanks for the info Curmedgeon. For such a thin layer of soil it sure grows some great looking trees.
