Or you could look at the other side of the state - there's a Costco in Sioux Falls, SD so you could live someplace cute like Luverne, MN (which really is a nice little town) and be within an easy drive of all of the shopping in Sioux Falls. The closest Trader Joe's on this side is in Omaha, though - two and a half hours away. I'm about ready to drive down to Omaha to, um, see some museums or something - and definitely go to Trader Joe's!

I live in Rochester. Moving to the cities in a few months because it's too dull and cornpone here. It does not seem like a city of 100,000 people at all, so don't rule it out on that alone. My previous town in FL was home to 50,000 and felt so much more crowded and unpleasant than Rochester.

Not "cities" per se...my shortlist for getting out of St. Paul which I've lived in my whole life:

Stillwater/Bayport
Lakeland
Forest Lake/Stacy/North Branch
South St. Paul
Lake Elmo

To a lesser extent, Maplewood or North St. Paul, since they're so close to St. Paul.

NW metro is a great place! There is a Trader Joe's in Maple Grove and whatever else you may need. MG might be a little too urban for your taste but there are plenty of cities a few miles further out that still have that "small town" feel.

For things to do inside during winter for kids, I always have a season pass to the zoo and the community center or ymca for swimming. However you will still need to totally bundle up just to get there. Good luck
