Besides from hunting or going bear hunting, have you ever had an black bear encounter or sighting in Minnesota?

It could be in your backyard, up at the cabin or while out camping or hiking.

We had one in White Bear township across from our beach on Highway 96 a couple of years ago. It was cub up a tree and the authorities got it to leave somehow.

I had one back in the mid-80's near Park Rapids. We were at Boy Scout summer camp and stupidly I had left some cookies just sitting in a zip-lock in the pocket of my backpack. I was in my friends tent 5 feet from mine playing poker when we heard grunting come by us, then the tipping and rolling of a locked box containing our canned items and stove. Then silence.... Then the grunting as Mr. Bear must have smelled the aroma of oreos wafting from my tent. Shortly after that came the shredding of my place of slumber as well as my backpack. We yelled to no avail as he/she must have been the starving bear, hell-bent on oreo consumption. We did learn that evening that bears apparently do not like the Van Halen "1984" album as David Lee Roth singing Panama was the only thing to scare him/her off. Lesson to be learned: 1. Do not ever leave food in your tent unless you plan on kissing a bear and 2. Bears are more prone to be scared off by Van Halen than yelling 15 year olds.

Oh, and tie your stuff up in a tree.

Seems to me that wildlife encounters are one of the biggest reasons to get outdoors.

I live up north, way out in the sticks, and I see one every couple years. I came within 5 feet of hitting one a few years ago. The last one I saw had been hit. I came within 50 feet of a bull moose also.

Often.

Had one poop on our entryway 3 feet from our door last summer.

Saw many in my days backpacking up and down the north shore.

They sure did a number on the English language!

"The incident began when the woman let her golden retriever outside after checking to make sure the bears, which had been seen on the property for several days, weren't around. After letting the dog out, three young bears unexpectedly ran out from under the deck and the dog to chase dafter them."
