Original thread where some with utopian mindsets argued that "it wasn't that bad".

The troubling reality?

2 teens shot at Southdale Mall

Two teenage boys were shot in a Southdale mall parking lot Friday evening during a fight that Edina police called gang-related.

An altercation between two groups ("Groups"... heh. That's right. Like the boy scouts are a group, or the Knights of Columbus.) of teenagers in the parking lot of Edina's Southdale Male Friday evening resulted in two teens being shot — one seriously — and a suspect still at large.

Yes, this is unfortunate. And yes, Southdale has some problems (like the fact that half the mall is boarded up, for one). But this incident wouldn't make me any less likely to go there. Bad stuff happens sometimes, even in the best of places. Not that Southdale is the "best of places," but it's not like it's typically a den of criminals run amok, either.

The location mentioned in the articles as "outside J.C. Penny" also just happens to be the bus stop.

I tried to give you rep points moving & uptown_urbanist...but apparently I have to spread the love.

Both your posts are what I would have said.

"utopian mindsets", give me a break Binky... Posting multiple links to the same recent news doesn't make me wary of Southdale Mall...find a bunch of other violent incidents that have happened recently at that mall and maybe you'll have something...

Just for the record, I am far more concerned about the two guys pulling up in a car and robbing random people in the street at gunpoint, this is a crime that may happen to anyone who happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time...who really cares about a dispute that happened between some youths and the resulting violence. Let them deal with their own crap, it hardly affects the safety of innocent bystanders like the random robberies do.

You only need to go as far as the police reports that happened in or around that mall.

I question the validity of any gangmember who hangs out at the mall.

On the contrary. A truly business minded thug would be crazy not to go after that mall. Do you know how many bored, rich teenagers hang out at Southdale? You could sell them **** as silver if you wanted to.

Didn't they see the "Southdale Center bans guns in these premises" signs?

There is already 5 or so low end jewlers doing that. Southdale ain't what it used to be. It has been on a 5+ year decline. Too close to MOA is probably part of it.
