I will be moving to Minneapolis in two weeks. I will be working in Fridley, I am looking for a 1 BED Apt. I don't know which areas to look for an apartment.

I would prefer to live near Minneapolis, at the same time I don't want to much of a daily commute. Could you guys suggest me some suburbs which are crime free, affordable (upto 650/month), and conveniently located ( 25 mile radius) near Fridley and Minneapolis??

Also, anybody has idea about how the traffic is in MPLS?

Thanks,

I would look into places like Columbia Heights.

Mounds View or New Brighton are decent areas, both border fridley.

Northeast Minneapolis generally mellow and has an abundance of affordable duplexes and small apartment buildings, and you could probably rent a small house in Columbia Heights for a reasonable amount, but stay away from the apartment buildings directly east of Central between about 44th and 49th (not talking about that big new condo development). Fridley itself is also going to be generally OK.

If you want to live in Minneapolis I agree with Tegonagle. Due to your work location Northeast would be the obvious choice. It's a nice area and the commute would be quick.

If you have any questions about specific addresses that you find affordable rentals at, let us know. (Obviously, that's what this board is for.) I am fairly familiar with a lot of the near suburbs, and am very familiar with Minneapolis itself.

Most of Minneapolis is actually better (crime-wise) than the most affordable rental areas of the suburbs, because the least expensive rentals in the suburbs are more likely to be clustered together in larger apartment complexes. Brooklyn Park is the quintessential example of this in the Twin Cities area. Also, the suburbs have far fewer police on any given shift than Minneapolis, so protection can be spread a bit thin at times. (For example, Columbia Heights has one cop for every 720 citizens, while Minneapolis has one for every 470 citizens.)

Traffic is generally fine. The beauty of this area is that there are so many different routes one can take that heavy traffic tends to disperse itself onto other alternate routes. Once you know your way around, you'll never be stuck for long; you'll just take a different route and be moving in no time.

I could not agree more.
