hey, i am a 20 year old white male and i have a friend that is moving into the phillips neighborhood in south minneapolis and he wants me to move with him, but i have heard a lot of bad things about this area, so i am still unsure. I was just wondering if this area is really that bad. And if i will be messed with a lot being that i am white. i have no prejudice towards any kind of person and i mind my own business and im used to the big city life. Is this area that bad? will i be safe to move there? if so what precautions should i take? is locking your door enough to stay safe? is it safe to go out at night? please answer any questions you can, help is very appreciated THANK YOU!

Phillips is a big area so it really depends what part you'd be living in. What are the cross-streets?

I know lots of people who live/have lived in Phillips. One of my friends lived near Peavey Park in the mid 1990s because his uncle owns a duplex there and his rent was next to nothing. It was much worse then, he worked evenings and rode the bus...and he never had any issues.

I think a lot of it comes down to plain and simple common sense. If you're smart and just go about your business no one is going to seek you out and harass you simply because they can.

NO, no no! I would never, ever recommend the Phillips area! I grew up about 5 miles from there. That area was always known as the "hood" to us.

My son goes to school (speech therapy) in the Phillips neighborhood. I walk while he's there and always feel comfortable. As someone else stated, there are better parts and parts to avoid. As for living there, you may experience more nuisance crimes but I wouldn't write it off as a bad area.

Default south minneapolis

dont listen to people who think phillips is a good area. i went to school at anderson in the phillips area. i was in 6th grade and 2 gangs were shooting at each other, this black dude got shot in the stomach and died a short time later i was only 12 when i saw this. and murders may be down these days but many people are still getting shot these days aroung there or there car stolen or there house broken into. south minneapolis is big with many nice areas. theres no need to move to phillips.

I lived in Phillips for two years in the mid-90s, including during the Murderapolis summer. Never had a problem with anyone. Granted, there were many areas where I would not walk at night, but I usually felt safe.

The Philips neighborhood use to be the worst in Minneapolis, but it has since been revitalized, and they have been cleaning up the area alot. There are still some gangs mostly mexican, and crime here and there, but people arent getting murdered there every day or anything. I lived down there for awhile, and as long as you mind your own buisness and use the common sense you need to in a inner city area, you can live there quite alright. You just have to hope your not victim of random violence or crime, but the thing is that can happen to anyone anywhere these days.

I biked down 38th street last summer going through bad intersections like Chicago and 38th with a 600$ bike and I was fine. You will be too. Granted during daylight hours. Just try to stay on main streets and you should be fine.
