Wondering about these two suburbs. Both are quite close to St. Paul. Woodbury strikes me as more affluent and upper-middle-class. Is that true?

What about outdoor activities? Does either place have lakes with public trails that go around (like the lakes in Minneapolis)?

Which one do you prefer?

Woodbury likes to appear more affluent. The average income in the two cities is nearly identical. Eagan is more down to earth. Eagan has Lebanon Hills park with trails but not paved like you find around the lakes in Minneapolis, they are more like groomed hiking trails (and cross country skiing). There are paved walking paths all around the city though, some through the wooded areas, some near the lakes but its not the same as just having a ring around the lake like Minneapolis.

Woodbury appears to have several trails around lakes: Colby Lake, Powers Lake, Markgrafs Lake. I'm just looking at maps, so I don't know what the experience is like around those.

I have lived in both Cities (Woodbury for 8 years on and off) and Eagan (for over 4 years)

Lebanon Hills is fun trial to walk and jog (it has 4 different running surfaces, paved, wood, sand, stone)

Eagan is also closer to downtown then woodbury (which is important for some) depending on where in Eagan you live it's quite easy to hop on 35/77/494

WHen I lived in Woodbury it's a pain in the buttocks just to get on the highway (took me 15 frigging minutes)

Is woodbury more upper middle class? yes Woodbury is also IMO very pretentious. You have 16 year olds driving their mommy's and daddy's BMW. So that alone tells what type of place it is.

I prefer Eagan just because of logictics and it's more economical and still a nice area

They are very similar cities. I personally would go with Eagan for the fact it is closer to both downtowns, and it is hillier than Woodbury, which I am a huge fan of. To be honest, Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, and Mendota Heights are my favorite suburbs.

Woodbury does have a higher median household income ($92,780) than Eagan ($80,243), as well as a higher median home value for owner-occupied housing ($281,100 vs. $257,700; all of this info is from census.gov). So yes, Woodbury is more affluent than Eagan, but there are still plenty of well-off people in the latter.

As someone who lives in Eagan, the park and trail system is one of the things I like best about it, along with the easy access to the downtowns, MOA, and the airport.

I have lived in both. Woodbury is better for shopping, library, and other services. Everything is more centralized. But I agree with other posters: Woodbury is down right snobby! I love Eagans open spaces--it just takes longer to get to things.

but in Eagan you are also across the river from the shopping meca...Mall of America

Honestly though, I hate shopping in Woodbury--everything is so spread out and you can't really get from one shop to the other easily. They really should have done some kind of a spoke design for all of those little "mall" areas..but then again, they didn't ask me

I get this vibe of Woodbury when I visit the Trader Joe's. Well dressed people grabbing the last bag of Thai rice left.

It also has to do with their architectural styles. Woodbury seems to be full of enclosed communities and oversized homes.
