I wasn't sure which forum to post this in as both Duluth & Minneapolis appear to be about the same distance away from Pine River but I'm hoping someone can maybe at least point me in the right direction.

I'm coming to visit family in Pine River, MN over Christmas (12/23-12/26) and was wondering what there is to do around there. Anyone know?

I do not.....but if you're between MSP and Duluth you could likely find a casino nearby (Hinckley comes to mind).

No idea about Pine River specifically (had to look it up), but since you're not in town for very long you'll probably find enough stuff to keep you busy in the immediate area; for a real "Minnesota" experience try looking for a lutefisk dinner. You can find them at some churches this time of the year (no need to be a member to go); once you arrive pick up whatever the local paper is, or look for event postings in local cafes. If it snows you can undoubtedly find some beautiful cross-country skiing trails around there (and places to rent you the skis). That's a resort area of the state, and there's a lot of outdoor-type activities available, especially if there's snow on the ground.

I've lived in MN most of my life and I've NEVER had lutefisk.....surely you can experience MN without eating some of the worst food imaginable!

A "real" MN experience that you COULD do (that I've also never done -- see how MN I am!) is ice fishing, especially further north. Now THAT would be quite unique to the area AND lots of fun (I'm sure)!

I've never gone ice fishing or had lutefisk, either (I've seen it, though)! It is part of Minnesota culture, though, and lutefisk dinners are one of those weird things you can find in this state and not a whole lot of other places. It would give you bragging rights! (and I think the dinners have lots of other things to eat.)

Is it cold enough for ice fishing yet, though? Here in Minneapolis, anyway, the lakes aren't yet frozen. I agree that it would be very "Minnesotan", though. Same thing going on a snowmobile (something else I've never done); if there's snow, I think that's something a lot of people like to do, and they have dedicated trails and everything.

I'd suggest FRESH Walleye over Lutefisk any day of the week! There are only a handful of places in the U.S. where you can get fresh Walleye on the menu, and WI and MI are two of the others.

I don't know if the water is frozen in Pine River, but I just assumed it was by now.
