Need a recommendation on a neurologist (especially one that's good with back injuries) in Apple Valley/Burnsville or surrounding area. If you know of a really great doctor further away, that is ok too. I would rather drive further to a great doctor than have a "good" one that is closer. Thanks!

I know a great ORTHOPEDIST in Bloomington (TRIA), but not a neurologist. I also have/had back problems, but nothing severe.

I don't think i've ever seen a question about a medical specialist quite like this one. I'd make two points. The first is that you should always start with a recommendation from your primary care physician. The second is the many neurologists tend to be in fairly narrow specialties, e.g. epilepsy, Parkinson's etc. You'll want a neurologist that is good in your particular area of need and to get to him or her, you may have to travel across town. Good luck.

I really don't understand the necessity of the comment "I don't think i've ever seen a question about a medical specialist quite like this one. " but if you must know, I am moving to the area and I don't have a primary care physician. I was injured in a car accident a few months ago and I need to make an appt with an followup neurologist as soon as I move. Excuse me for seeming overly defensive/sensitive but as I said I don't see the purpose for that comment. I have already researched physician referral sights but thought I would throw it out there to see if anyone here may know of someone, since they have been so helpful on other questions I have asked.

It wasn't meant to be offensive. It was simply a statement. I have never heard of anyone looking for a highly specialized field as neurology restrict their choices to such a small geographical area. That struck me as an odd requirement. I wasn't asking about the nature of your needs but was puzzled that you wouldn't drive a few miles to get the best care. I see a specialist and people come from as far away as India to see him.

And if you haven't asked your primary care physician, you might try as doctors seem to know the best specialists around the country and not just their own town. You might have to drop the narrow geographic requirement though. I myself would rather do that than ask anonymous strangers on an internet posting board, but to each their own.

My family has a genetic disease (tuberous sclerosis Tuberous sclerosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) and we have always used the Noran Clinic for diagnosis and treatment of various neurological manifestations of the disease. Myself, both of my sisters, my dad, and several cousins have all seen doctors there. They have locations in Minneapolis, Blaine, Burnsville, Edina, Plymouth, and Maplewood.

My sister in particular suffered from many seizures, sometimes several hundred in a single day. Her primary neurologist (who she still sees) is Dr. Janousek (Pediatric Neurologist Biographies: Steven Janousek, MD). Working with a neurosurgeon at Mayo, and she had a large tumor removed from her brain at 22 months, and has now been seizure-free for over nine years. Dr. Janousek and Dr. Buchhalter (Mayo) have done more for our family than just about anyone. Obviously Janousek himself is a pediatric neurologist, but based on our experiences at Noran, they are all absolutely wonderful. We will always be thankful to Noran and Mayo for giving my sister the opportunity to live a normal life.

Dr. Robert Johnson, TRIA. Look him up, he's one of the best. He may or may not be taking new patients though, and the only reason I know him is through my father (another physician).

I tend to agree: IFF you find a great physician, you will also find yourself going the distance to see him/her and at any cost -- it WILL BE WORTH YOUR WHILE!

Thanks so much for your help! I actually found another physician at TRIA that comes highly recommended as well and I was able to get an appointment. I appreciate you answering my question.
