I hate to compare one place to another, but Chicago and Ames, IA are my only frames of reference. I am moving to the Twin Cities and would love to know how the two cities compare during the winter. Please include length of the season.

Thanks again.

My *impression* is that Chicago is more prone to blizzard-like conditions, because storms build over the plains and gain speed (+the lake effect). However, my *impression* is that the snow does not stick for as long in Chicago, and that it does not typically get as cold in Chicago (especially after wind-chill is factored in).

However, all in all, I think the winters would be pretty comparable.

About 10 degrees warmer during December, January and February and a similar amount of snow.

I assume you are speaking of Chicago being warmer. Thank you very much.

I lived in Chicago (downtown--not 'burbs) for 10 years and have now lived in Minneapolis for 10 years. I'll take a Minneapolis winter over a Chicago one any day.

Yes, it's colder here and there is more snow. But, the cold is not as "biting" so it's easier to be outside and it's so much sunnier here! In Chicago it took forever for streets to get cleared after snow--clean-up here is quick.

In Chicago (again, remember I lived downtown), winter was just a serious annoyance. Here it's a whole different set of opportunities of things to do.

Ah yes, that is true! The cold here isn't so "raw" or "bone chilling" as a wetter cold air is like you may have near the lake. It's very very dry though, and for me at least that really irritates my skin and lungs.

Chicago has the lake effect so it's temperatures typically are not as extreme as TC
