Hello All,

I will be moving to Milwaukee on my new job. I am currently looking for apartments. I would like to know in which neighborhoods most of the Indian (Asian) families stay. I am aware that a lot of Indian students (bachelors) stay near the UWM area. But I am only interested in Indian families.

Thanks,
Krishna

Hi Krishna,

You're right that the UWM area is home to many young Asian Indian singles. The families tend to live in the suburbs.

Some Asian Indians live in the northern suburbs (including Mequon and River Hills), and others live in the south suburbs (such as Oak Creek and Franklin), but it seems to me that most Asian Indian families live in the western suburbs, such as Brookfield, Pewaukee, Wauwatosa, etc.

The main Hindu and Sikh temples are located in Pewaukee, and the main Indian food market is in Wauwatosa. Brookfield has a high concentration of Indian restaurants. (There are many such restaurants elsewhere in Mke, though, including near the UWM area.)

For specifics, you may want to contact the Wisconsin Coalition of Asian Indian Organizations. Here's their website:

Hi quijote,

Thanks for the information. I was told that the western suburbs are not a safe place to live. So I am a bit surprised to hear that Indian families live in these suburbs.

All the suburbs are safe places to live. Whether or not they are as open and accepting as the city proper is another story...

The Western burbs are safe. In my little neighborhood (~20 homes) in Sussex, we have 3 families from India and 1 from Afghanistan. I have never heard them say anything about safetyand I know them quite well.

There will be some Indians on the east side of Milwaukee. There are also some in the western suburbs. A cousin of mine lives in a subdivision by 51st and Rawson in Franklin and the neighborhood is now nearly 50% Indian (Many have roots in Punjab) The subdivision has at least 60 homes.

And by the way the crime in the suburbs, especially the western ones is minimal. The western suburbs are probably the safest, and all of the suburbs of Milwaukee are incredibly safe.

The amount of Indians and Arabs has gone up dramatically over this past decade in the south suburbs of Oak Creek and Franklin. One of the elementary schools in Franklin (Pleasant View) is now over 10% Asian indian. I will also add that these families also tend to be quite wealthy.

A couple of my Asian Indian colleagues live in Franklin and really like it. For the record, Krishna, there is a Sikh temple in the far southside of Milwaukee, near Oak Creek and Franklin.

Gurudwara...

As others have said, you won't have any problems in the suburbs, particularly the ones mentioned.

Hello! I am working with a neighborhood organization in Lincoln Village and we are compiling a study of all of Milwaukee's cultural traditions, from German to Mexican to Indian to Hmong. We are almost done with this study, and are now filling the gaps with some groups that are less-well represented in the study. I wonder if anyone with Indian roots would be interested in being interviewed for this book? The interview takes only 30 minutes, and we ask questions relating to how you practice your culture in Milwaukee, how you stay connected to the homeland, how you pass along your traditions to your kids, etc. We want to learn about how Milwaukee is growing as a multicultural city.

Please email me at alexandra.trumbull@alverno.edu if you are interested! I would much appreciate 30 minutes of your time!

Thank you very much,

Alexandra
